Celebrating 1 year in Canberra

| | ,

It’s hard to believe we have already been living in Canberra for one year! We marked the occasion by inviting friends and neighbours over to our house to celebrate with us.

Guess what? We had the most perfect weather for it. A really warm and sunny afternoon somewhere in the 20s, no wind and not too hot. That wouldn’t happen in the UK in October for sure.

In some ways it doesn’t feel that we have been living here in Canberra all that long, but in others it does. We have now seen all 4 seasons in Canberra and find ourselves back in the storm season and spring that we arrived in. Where the weather can still vary by 20 degrees from one day to the next. This week we had a couple of days of 29 degrees and 31 degrees and then followed by cooler days and even a 5 degree morning.

People keep asking us Has living in Australia lived up to our expectations?

I think yes overall it has. Some days we pinch ourselves and find it hard to believe we are here. Especially on those bright sunny days that you don’t have that often in England. Other days life just seems to plod on as usual – domestic chores, the school run, work, but with an aching sadness that family and friends from the UK are so far away. Sometimes phone calls or skype are hard to arrange because it’s always the wrong time of day.

The best things about moving to Canberra have been: the lovely sunny days in Canberra (whilst appreciating there is a serious drought in the area, the sunshine has been so beneficial for our health and energy levels), the warm welcome we have received, exploring the beautiful bushland, seeing incredible wildlife, having fun days out in Canberra, trips to the beautiful coast, the list goes on and on.

It hasn’t all been easy of course, far from it, we are still finding our feet and it’s still hard to be on the other side of the world from our families. If only we could transport them all here magically!
